scott street, newcastle – completed project

The Alterations and additions to the Penthouse Apartment in Newcastle was recently completed after a year long design and construction phase.  The design intent was to provide a large open planned kitchen and dining area flowing onto an outdoor terrace and taking advantage of unique views over Newcastle Harbour.  The client also required a new ensuite and walk-in-robe; and an updated family room with a new fire place.

Project challenges included the apartment being located on the 7th Floor of a residential apartment block; enhancing and enlarging the current space but staying within the existing building footprint; noise impact during construction for neighbours; and site access during construction.  These challenges have been successfully addressed within the space and timeframes of the project.

The material palette is inspired by the site’s unique outlook onto Newcastle’s working industrial harbour, with memories of the steelworks captured through the use of Axolotl feature panels along the kitchen side wall, and the Coal industry mimicked in the form and colour of the kitchen island bench located at the heart of the space.  The industrial palette is spliced by the crisp and clean turquoise of the splashback and glazed doors to represent the natural beauty of Newcastle’s coastal setting.
