With the initial driving of sheet piling the construction of the United Goninan Limited (UGL) wheel lathe has commenced construction. This project involves the installation of a new Hegenscheidt wheel lathe in the Broadmeadow UGL workshops. This final construction will be a linear workshop clad in precast concrete to the north adjacent to the Main North rail line. The remainder of the building will be a steel clad warehouse style building running the length of the existing workshop.
Sheet piling was needed to deal with the high watertable in this location and an inverted bathtub design has been used to keep the ground water out of the Lathe pit. The base of the pit has now been excavated and the reinforcement for the pit is being installed. In the next few weeks we will see the pouring of the first slabs and commencement of the main building foundations and structure. If you are able take the train from Hamilton along the Dungog line and have a look at the construction underway.
